However, when I got home, I thought, "Oh, no! What will they think of my recommendation when they read the parts in her book that are...(let's just say)...less mainstream Christian."
Well, I'm a pretty eclectic reader and I find inspiration in a wide range of genres and authors. I don't always agree with everything they write, nor their theology, nor do I think other readers should. My favorite authors run the gamut of backgrounds and have a voice that is sometimes often irreverent. But they speak to me in ways that some run-of-the-mill Christian writers just can't or don't.
So, here is a list of just some of my favorite authors/books that I have found very meaningful to my own Christianity, and not all of them are "religious".
Mary Doria Russell - The Sparrow
Rob Bell - Velvet Elvis
Anne Lamott - Bird by Bird
Dean Koontz - Dragon Tears, Odd Thomas Series
Sara Miles - Take this Bread
Martin E. Marty - Pilgrims in Their Own Land
Kathleen Norris - Amazing Grace
Marcus Borg - Putting Away Childish Things
